William Harry McRaven is a former United States Navy four-star Admiral who served as the ninth Commander U.S. Special Operations Command. Admiral McRaven previously served as the Commander Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) from March 2008 to August 2011. Prior to assuming command of JSOC on June 13 2008 he served from June 2006 to March 2008 as Commander Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR). In addition to his duties as COMSOCEUR he was designated as the first director of the NATO Special Operations Forces Coordination Centre (NSCC) where he was charged with enhancing the capabilities and inter-operability of all NATO Special Operations Forces. Admiral McRaven assumed his current assignment on August 8 2011

In the War on Terror SEALs have been utilized almost exclusively for land-based operations including Direct Action Hostage Rescue Counter Terrorism Special Reconnaissance unconventional warfare and foreign internal defense operations. Without exception all SEALs are male members of either the United States Navy or the United States Coast Guard
